Municipal Senior Citizens' Advisory Council

The Municipal Senior Citizens’ Advisory Council of the City of Jena is elected in accordance with the Thuringian Act on Strengthening the Rights of Senior Citizens to Participation and Involvement (ThürSenMitwBetG) and the Thuringian Municipal Code. The Advisory Council is an independent body representing the interests of the city’s senior citizens and serves to strengthen their rights to participation. It acts as an advisory body to the City Council and the city administration.

The Advisory Board’s work is intended to expand the scope of action for Jena’s older residents and to spark their interest in addressing municipal issues. The members therefore engage in dialogue with the city’s senior citizens to identify their needs.

Ongoing Responsibilities of the Senior Citizens’ Advisory Board

  • Advising and supporting the City Council and the city administration, in particular the senior care planner and the volunteer senior citizens’ representative
  • Collaborating with providers of residential elder care, such as social service centers and home care services
  • Representing the interests of the older generation in the media and in public relations
  • Providing advice to older adults (legal advice is excluded)
  • Participating in municipal networks for seniors
  • Participating in matters related to the construction of senior housing and senior care facilities, as well as public transportation infrastructure
  • Participation in the Thuringia State Senior Citizens’ Council

Additional responsibilities of the Senior Citizens’ Advisory Board

  • Visits to senior housing complexes, nursing homes, and community centers, as well as events for seniors in the city’s neighborhoods
  • Maintaining contact with facility advisory boards and the municipal facility oversight authority
  • Representing the interests of seniors in local public transportation
  • Advocating for the safety needs of older adults

The Municipal Senior Citizens’ Advisory Council of the City of Jena is an important partner and advocate for the needs, concerns, and opinions of older generations. It operates in four working groups corresponding to the city council’s committees:

  • WG 1: Social Affairs / Health / Long-Term Care (Chair: Ms. Jordan)
  • WG 2: Public Order / Safety / Urban Development / Environment (Chair: Mr. Kühne)
  • WG 3: Culture (Chair: Ms. Rechenbach)
  • WG 4: Education / Sports (Chair: TBD)

The working group leaders participate in the following City Council committee meetings: Social Affairs Committee, Urban Development and Environment Committee, and Culture Committee.

The meetings of the Municipal Senior Citizens' Advisory Council are open to the public. Interested citizens are invited to attend. The dates are listed in the city's meeting calendar. The calendar also contains all meeting minutes and the contact information for the members.

The Municipal Senior Citizens’ Advisory Council is supported by the Senior Citizens’ Representative. Her role is to strengthen the older generation’s rights to participate and to promote active political engagement.

The Senior Citizens’ Office also provides advice to the Municipal Senior Citizens’ Advisory Council and assists with public relations efforts.
